Balanced Attack Leads Men's Basketball Past New Haven, 80-65

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Four players scored in double-figures as the American International College men's basketball defeated the University of New Haven 80-65 Wednesday night at Butova Gymnasium. Junior #Allen Aragbaye# (Corona, Calif.) netted 18 points with eight boards to lead the Yellow Jackets (1-1, 1-0 NE-10).

Both teams shot poorly in the first half and rebounded nicely in the second. AIC shot just 33.3 percent (10-30) in the first half to the Chargers' (0-2, 0-1 NE-10) 38.1 percent (8-21) and held a slim 24-20 lead at the break.

The Yellow Jackets shot 61.5 percent (16-26) from the floor and 55.6 percent (5-9) from downtown in the second stanza as they outscored New Haven 56-45. The Chargers converted 18-of-23 (64.3 percent) of their shots from the floor in the second half and finished the game shooting 53.1 percent (26-49) from the field.

AIC used a 10-2 run five minutes into the second half to open a 46-34 lead but New Haven gradually chipped away at that advantage and pulled back within four at 57-53 with 5:52 left in the contest. The Yellow Jackets then closed the door on the Chargers with a 14-2 run to make it a 72-57 contest with 1:58 on the clock, putting the game out of reach.

Senior forward #Aikeem Vanderhorst# (Bay Shore, N.Y.) was 6-of-6 from the field and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe for his 17 points. He also grabbed six rebounds and four assists. Senior guard #Mike Troll# (New York, N.Y.) netted 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field and handed out five assists, while sophomore guard #Adrian Hynes-Guery# (Montreal, Que.) tallied 13 points with three boards.

Senior guard Darryl Greene (Clinton, Md.) poured in a game-high 27 points on 11-of-17 shooting from the floor for New Haven with four assists, four rebounds and two steals. Senior forward Kelvin Jackson (Upper Marlboro, Md.) fell just short of a double-double with nine points and nine boards.

The Yellow Jackets will next travel to the College of Saint Rose Saturday for a 3:30 Northeast-10 contest.
