No. 8 Southern Connecticut Rallies to Beat AIC 5-4

New Haven, Conn. – Eighth-ranked Southern Connecticut State University scored twice in the span of 4:13 to overcome a one-goal deficit and record a 5-4 win over the American International College field hockey team Wednesday night. Sophomore #Rhonwen Peters# (Aquashicola, Pa.) setup a pair of goals for the Yellow Jackets.

The Owls, who are ranked eighth in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Coaches' Poll, improved to 11-8 overall and 11-6 in the Northeast-10, while AIC dropped to 5-14 overall and 4-13 in conference play.

The game was tied at 3-3 after the first half before freshman #Amanda McLean# (Branford, Conn.) gave the Yellow Jackets a 4-3 lead just 2:57 into the second frame. SCSU answered when senior Whitney Martin (Harwinton, Conn.) scored her second goal of the game to tie it at 4-all in the 55th-minute and the Owls took the lead for good in the 59th-minute on sophomore Sara Winterbottom's (Burlington, Conn.) second goal of the contest.

Sophomore Lauren Zarrella (Morris, Conn.) made nine saves to record the win in goal, while freshman #Kim Steiner# (Redford, N.Y.) had 10 saves in taking the loss. The Owls out shot AIC 24-23 and each team had seven penalty corners.

The Yellow Jackets took a 1-0 lead 9:32 into the contest when senior #Jacki Lapointe# (Danvers, Mass.) took a pass from Peters and scored on a partial break away. The Owls answered three minutes later when senior Jennifer Sousa (Hartford, Conn.) found the back of the cage and Martin gave SCSU a 2-1 at the 15:24 mark of the game.

AIC tied the game in the 23rd-minute on Lapointe's second goal of the game and regained the lead in the 30th-minute when Peters setup senior #Chelsey Grogan# (Greenfield, Mass.). Winterbottom tied the game off a rebound with 3:03 left in the first half.

The Yellow Jackets will wrap up the 2008 season Saturday when they travel to Saint Michael's for a 1 p.m. Northeast-10 contest.
