New Haven Opens New Year With 71-67 Men's Basketball Win Over AIC

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The American International College men's basketball team dropped a 71-67 decision to visiting New Haven Wednesday afternoon at Butova Gymnasium in a non-conference contest. The Chargers improved to 6-5 on the season, while the Yellow Jackets dropped to 5-7 overall. Sophomore forward Aikeem Vanderhorst (Bay Shore, N.Y.) scored 16 points and grabbed five rebounds for AIC.

New Haven used a 20-4 run over a nine-minute span of the first half to take the lead for good at 24-10 with 7:38 to go in the first half. The Yellow Jackets answered with a 17-7 run over the next 6:56 that was capped by a jumper from senior guard Jeff Dosado (Montreal, P.Q.) to make it a 31-29 contest with 44 seconds remaining in the period.

Senior guard Tetrick Stonar (Hartford, Conn.) followed by grabbing an offensive rebound off his own missed shot and was fouled by sophomore forward Colson Senat (Montreal, P.Q.) as he hit the ensuing layup with four seconds remaining in the first half. Stonar hit the free throw to complete the three-point play and give the Chargers a 34-29 lead at halftime.

New Haven led by eight or more points for most of the second half and led 61-48 with 3:32 to go in the contest. The Yellow Jackets then went on a 15-4 run to cut their deficit to two at 65-63 with 31 second left on the clock. Sophomore guard Darryl Green (Clinton, Md.) and Stonar were a combined 6-6 at the free throw line in the closing seconds as the Chargers held on for the 71-67 final.

AIC was back within two at 69-67 after sophomore guard Mike Troll's (New York, N.Y.) lay-up with 14.5 seconds left and Greene hit both free throws after getting fouled on the inbounding pass. Junior forward Lucius Millinder (Belleville, N.J.) followed with a 3-pointer that caught the iron and Greene got the rebound to end the game.

Dosado finished with 12 points, two rebounds and two assists for the Yellow Jackets and Senat fell just short of a double-double with 10 points and nine boards. Millinder registered totals of eight points, six rebounds, two assists and one blocked shot.

Stonar registered a game-high 24 points with five assists and three rebounds to lead New Haven. Sophomore forward Cassius Chaney (Old Saybrook, Conn.) added 22 points after going 9 of 13 from the field and 3 for 5 at the free throw line.

AIC will next host Southern New Hampshire Saturday at Butova Gymnasium in a 3:30 p.m. Northeast-10 contest.
