Box Score
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - In only her second collegiate start, freshman goalie
Nicole Spence (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) turned away 16 shots on net, but it wasn't enough to lift the Yellow Jackets over the pesky Skyhawks of Stonehill College, as they fell 3-2 in double-overtime Thursday evening at Stagg Field on campus at Springfield College.
The game's first goal was scored by AIC midfielder
Stephanie Laskey (Erving, Mass.). Laskey notched an unassisted score early in the first-stanza at the 1:55 mark. The goal was tallied after a plethora of Yellow Jackets fired shots on the goal until Laskey picked up the ball and stroked it past Sky Hawks goalie Dani Ryder. Ryder turned away 10 shots in the contest.
Stonehill answered the Laskey goal just under eight minutes later when Aly Boulis took a feed from the right side of the box from Jackie Ladino and pushed it past Spence.
Stonehill out-shot the Yellow Jackets' 22-14 during the duration of the extended match.
Stonehill eventually took a 2-1 lead when Laura Nimon scored a score at the 19:21 mark in the first-half off of a rebound from several other Sky Hawk scoring attempts.
The game remained in Stonehill's favor until
Nicole Phelps (Nassau, NY) took a pass from
Jamie Anderson right out in front of the goal and smacked it through the crease for the game-tying goal.
Both teams fought valiantly through the first overtime and into the second extra-frame when Claire Houihan finally ended the match, scoring on a rebound, out in front of the cage.
AIC had plenty of scoring opportunities in overtime but never found the game-ending goal. The young Yellow Jackets played hand-in-hand with the conference's top squad but couldn't muster up the final goal to garner the victory.
With the win Stonehill improved to 10-1 overall and 8-1 in the Northeast-10 while the Jacket's fall to 2-7 in the conference and 2-8 overall.
AIC will take on Assumption College this Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Stagg Field
