SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Despite being up 2-0 at halftime, the American International College field hockey team fell 4-3 in overtime, to the Purple Knight's of Saint Michael's College in a Northeast-10 showdown Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field on campus at Springfield College.
The win propels the Purple Knight's to 2-5 overall and 1-4 in the Northeast-10 while the loss drops the Yellow Jackets to 2-4 overall and 2-4 in the Northeast-10.
AIC got ahead 2-0 off of goals from
Stephanie Laskey (Erving, Mass.) and
Chelsey Grogan (Greenfield, Mass.) in the first-frame. Laskey scored the team's first-goal after receiving a penalty corner pass from
Nicole Signorelli (East Greenbush, N.Y.) and blasting it past Purple Knight goalie Jordan Smalling who recorded five saves in net.
With just 11 ticks showing on the clock before halftime Grogan took a feed from
Jamie Anderson (North Attleboro, Mass.) from the right hash and snuck it by Smalling to give the Jackets a two-goal advantage.
Saint Micahel's climbed back into the game when Chelsea Kimball got on a breakaway after taking a pass from Kaitlin Koffink and fired a shot past AIC netminder
Cindy Armand (Danvers, Mass.) who also recorded five saves in net.
The Yellow Jackets made the score 3-1 at the 47:57 mark, after
Nicole Phelps redirected an Anderson shot into the back of the cage.
With the score 3-1, Saint Michael's mounded a comeback behind the brilliant play of Andrea Slaven who notched three goals, one of which in overtime to end the game.
Slaven scored her first goal two minutes after the Phelps score unassisted from the left-wing. Slaven struck again at the 53:19 mark after taking a cross from Brittany O'Brien and flicking it past Armand, tying the score.
With things evened at three all, the game went into overtime were Slaven needed only 3:13 to position her self for the game-winning goal.
Next up, the Yellow Jackets will visit UMass-Lowell September 18th. The game is slated to start at 7::00 pm.
