PLEASANTVILLE, New York - The American International College women's volleyball team took the first step in starting a new winning streak on Saturday, September 26, downing Pace University 25-19, 25-13, 25-23 in a nonconference matchup.
AIC is now 14-1 on the season.
AIC built up an early first-set lead and maintained it, and then a four-point run featuring two
Selin Guler kills pushed the Yellow Jackets to a 23-17 edge. They ultimately finished the set off on a
Janelys Perez Cortes strike.
The team then roared out of the gate in the second to built an 11-6 lead, with back-to-back blocks as a key. A subsequent run extended the advantage to 20-8 before the Yellow Jackets put away the set on back-to-back miscues by the Setters.
Pace fought hard in the final set, overcoming an early AIC surge to take a 21-20 lead before
Lajla Rasljanin put down a kill and followed with a block to flip AIC back in front. A
Carissa Michel ace and then a
Victoria Mendez kill from Rasljanin put AIC on the brink, and
Defne Aydin finished the match with the final kill of the contest.
Perez Cortez, Michel, and Aydin all made nine kills for AIC, while Rasljanin had seven and seven blocks.
Mia Berdecia made 11 digs, and Mendez passed out 29 assists and made nine digs.
AIC next faces Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday, September 29 at 7:00 p.m. in a nonconference matchup.Â
