SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts — Joe O'Brien has become a valued member of the Yellow Jackets community through his dedication, leadership, and passion for collegiate athletics. Originally from Hamden, Connecticut, O'Brien currently serves as the Assistant Athletic Director for Internal Operations at American International College. Now entering his fifth year at AIC, he has played an important role in supporting the day-to-day success of Yellow Jackets Athletics.

Described by colleagues as reliable, hardworking, and passionate, O'Brien brings a team-first mentality to everything he does. His journey to AIC was driven by the opportunity to continue growing professionally while making an impact within a collegiate athletic department.

Outside of athletics, O'Brien enjoys spending time hiking and exploring the outdoors. While he appreciates nature, he also admits there is another side to his personality that surprises people. He is a big fan of "trashy reality television shows."

Like many professionals entering a new environment, O'Brien faced challenges early in his career at AIC. Transitioning into Division II athletics required him to adapt quickly while learning the importance of preparation, structure, and long-term planning. Through those experiences, he developed a stronger understanding of how organization and consistency contribute to success behind the scenes.

When reflecting on advice for student-athletes preparing for life after college, O'Brien emphasizes the importance of embracing structure and approaching each day with purpose. "Be excited and ready to attack every day," O'Brien said. He also encourages athletes to discover a new passion outside of the sport they dedicated so much of their lives to playing.

One of O'Brien's proudest moments at AIC came during the baseball team's 2025 NE10 regular season championship run. Having the opportunity to travel with the team to Myrtle Beach early in the season and later witness the group capture a conference title made the experience especially rewarding. Watching the team's journey from start to finish reinforced the strong sense of community within AIC Athletics.

Throughout his career, O'Brien credits Nick Callini, AIC's Head Baseball Coach, with being one of his biggest influences. Someone he can rely on for both professional guidance and personal advice. That mentorship has helped shape his approach to leadership and navigating the challenges of collegiate athletics.

For O'Brien, being part of the Yellow Jackets family is about more than operations and logistics. It is about building relationships, creating opportunities, and helping student-athletes and staff succeed every day.
