Phifer, Kendall break records in Men's Lacrosse finale at SNHU

HOOKSETT, New Hampshire - Dameer Phifer set the NCAA Division II record for caused turnovers in a season, while Nicholas Kendall broke the American International College record for saves in a season as the AIC men's lacrosse team fell 19-8 to Southern New Hampshire in Northeast 10 Conference play on Saturday, April 18.

AIC ends the year at 1-14 and 0-8 in the NE10.

Jordan Boyenko opened the scoring just 11 seconds in, but the Penmen scored the next three before Aiden Moscarello scored at 4:31 to cut the gap to 3-2; that ended the scoring in the frame, with Kendall making three saves down the stretch.

The Penmen went on a run in the second, scoring five goals in the first 7:49, but Seven Gillingham set up Boyenko to break the streak at 10:21. AIC scored once more in the frame, a solo Max Smith effort at 14:09, but at half trailed 10-4.

The third saw both teams score in bunches; Gillingham was set up by Camden Macdonald at 2:52, while Macdonald found Jordan Fox open on a man-up opportunity for a tally at 8:23. Gillingham then hit the net on a feed from Ryan Levis at 10:51. After three, AIC trailed 13-7.

The Penmen pulled away in the fourth to win, with Boyenko setting up Levis's first goal of the season at 4:12 to end the scoring for AIC.

Phifer's fifth caused turnover of the day, a drawn charge call on Lasse Volquardsen with 2:38 left in regulation, was his 59th of the year, surpassing the mark set by former Yellow Jacket Ries Bower two years ago for the record at AIC, in the NE10, and across NCAA Division II. His 86 ground balls also ranks fourth in program history in a single season.

Kendall, meanwhile, climbed the last two rungs of the ladder to the top of the saves list for AIC. His stop on Blake Wozniak at 6:15 of the first moved him past Matt Sayegh's prior record of 250 stops for the men's lacrosse team set in 2017, and another save on Wozniak, this time at the 9:27 mark of the third, moved him past Mary Jo Lavoie, who made 259 saves for the women's lacrosse team in 2000.

Other players reached high lines for the team as well.

Boyenko ended the season with 35 goals, fifth-most in program history in a season; his 61 tallies in just two seasons of play is ninth in team history. His 47 points on the season rank him ninth in team history.

Gillingham's 31 assists is the second-most in a season, behind only last year's record 39 by Tyler Goode; his 59 for a career is third to Goode and the late Aaron McNab; with one season to go, Gillingham needs 14 to pass McNab for the most in program history. His 107 points total also ranks third in program history; McNab owns that record at 160, while Ben Reese is second at 155, putting the mark within reach; his 49 this season is the fourth-most in a single campaign in program history.

Finally, Moscarello reached 300 faceoffs won, becoming just the second player in program history to do so; he is at 307 total, and needs to win 128 next season to beat Michael Palmieri's record of 434. His 156 wins this season is also second only to Palmieri, who won 178 faceoffs his senior year of 2016.
