SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College baseball team made a spirited comeback effort but fell just short, 6-5, to Southern Connecticut State University in a single Northeast 10 Conference game on Wednesday, April 15.
AIC is now 13-22 overall and 9-14 in the NE10.
The game opened well for the Yellow Jackets, as
Yeudy Ramirez,
Cole Patterson, and
Leandro Guevara each singled, with Guevara driving Ramirez home, and the other two advanced on a bad throw from left. That allowed Patterson to score when
Josh Frometa hit a grounder to short, giving AIC a 2-0 lead.
The Owls tied the game in the third with a single, double, and single driving in a run; the next hitter flew into a double play, but a run came in on that sequence. They then took the lead an inning later with a walk and two base hits.
Southern Connecticut added additional runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh, although the sixth-inning score was matched when Frometa went deep for a solo blast. Guevara also homered in the eighth, bringing AIC within a 6-4 margin.
In the ninth,
Nate Suncar and
Derek Pula each reached thanks to a hit by pitch and a walk.
Jordani Marcano pinch ran for Suncar, and scored on a Patterson single, but the tying run was stranded at third after a flyout and a strikeout.Â
AIC returns to action Saturday, April 18 with two against Bentley University, the first of which begins at noon.
