Softball splits at Post

WATERBURY, Connecticut - The American International College softball team used a 10-run inning to salvage a split with Post University on Wednesday, March 25, falling 4-1 and winning 16-7.

AIC is now 4-12 on the season.

The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring with a two-out rally in the second; Nevaeh Trejo singled to right-center and then swiped second, allowing her to score when Macey Burns smacked a single through the middle.

However, the Eagles responded in a big way in the second with a home run to tie the game.

The score stayed 1-1 until the fifth, when the Eagles strung together three singles and a lineout to right field to bring in the go-ahead run. Another single re-loaded the bases, and a double brought in two, ultimately leading to the 4-1 final.

AIC wasted no time in taking a multi-run lead in game two. Brianna Salazar started with a bunt single to lead off, and Lauryn Ramalho followed with a hit up the middle. Morgan Bemont sacrificed the duo over, and Trejo singled to bring them both home.

In the second, Salazar smacked a one-out single through the left side and Ramalho singled to right to follow. Bemont then hit a grounder to short that was thrown away, with Salazar scampering home on the miscue for a 3-0 edge.

Post pulled back within one in the same inning; a leadoff double, two walks, a groundout, and a single allowed the Eagles to net a pair of runs.

If the Eagles had comeback hopes, however, they were dashed, as AIC exploded offensively in the third. It started with Burns singling on a 3-1 pitch, putting it back through the middle. Mikaya Doucette and Galilea Pedraza-Payta walked to pack the bases, and Salazar and Ramalho each nabbed their third singles of the game, driving a run home each.

Bemont followed with an RBI walk, and Marilyn Augusta drove in Salazar with a hit. Trejo then drove a base knock to left to score Ramalho and Bemont, giving AIC a 9-2 edge.

The Eagles changed pitchers, but Burns drove Augusta in with a single to left, and Doucette put the cherry on top by crushing a three-run shot to left for a 13-2 edge.

Post did score two in the fourth, but AIC added three more in the fifth, with Belen Benito knocking two home on a hit to right and Pedraza-Payta adding a sacrifice fly.

The Eagles scored three of their own in the bottom of the fifth for the 16-7 final.

AIC opens up Judy Groff Field on Friday, March 27 against Northeast 10 Conference foe Franklin Pierce University at 2:00 p.m. for the first game of a doubleheader.
