QUEENS, New York - The American International College women's volleyball team scored a 25-22, 23-25, 25-19, 25-22 win over Queens College in a nonconference matchup on Wednesday, September 24.
AIC is now 5-3 overall.
The first set saw 12 tie scores and eight lead changes as neither side led by more than three points until late in the set when
Chelsea Foulis aced back-to-back serves to force a Queens timeout with the score 22-18 AIC. The Knights pulled within one as they scored four of the next five points, but
Victoria Soto Burgos finished a pass from
Zorybeth Febres to give AIC set point, and an error by the Queens attack finished the job. In total, AIC aced five serves in the set, and that, coupled with 12 Knights errors between attack and serve, allowed the Yellow Jackets to take a set that they only totaled seven kills in.
The second set was similarly back-and-forth, but Queens was able to maintain a slight edge throughout as both offenses hit impressively; the Yellow Jackets made 18 kills to just three errors, including six on 12 swings by
Janelys Perez Cortes and five on 11 attacks by
Carissa Michel, but the Knights went 16 against two. The home side eventually won by the barest of margins, 25-23, to tie the match 1-1.
The third set saw the biggest lead yet in the match, as a Michel kill that made the score 15-9 midway through forced Queens to take a timeout. The Knights pushed back, but the Yellow Jackets kept on scoring, ultimately winning on a Queens service error. The big key was defense; AIC held the Knights to just seven kills, thanks in part to six digs by
Perla Rosa.Â
In the fourth, Queens jumped out to an early 7-2 lead, forcing Eli Irizarry to take a timeout. The Yellow Jackets responded to their coach, scoring the next five points and tying the match. Queens rebuilt its lead up to 17-13, with that point coming on a key block, drawing AIC's second timeout. The home side expaned to go ahead 21-16, but AIC was able to turn the tide with a pair of kills each from Perez Cortes and
Selin Guler to jump up 23-22. That caused Queens to take its last timeout, but to no avail; Guler notched a kill on the next point before AIC scored match point on an attack error to win the set and match.
Perez Cortes led AIC with 16 kills, while Guler had 12, and Michel had nine in just three sets. Soto Burgos hit .500, collecting seven kills on 14 swings with three blocks. Rosa corralled 23 digs, while Guler also made a dozen. Febres led the match with a career-best 33 digs.
AIC will next have 10 days off before a trip west to Buffalo, New York to face D'Youville University and Daemen University at 10:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 4 before visiting Roberts Wesleyan University on Sunday, October 5 at 1:00 p.m. in Rochester, New York.
