MANCHESTER, New Hampshire - The American International College field hockey team fell 3-2 in overtime to No. 8 Southern New Hampshire University in a nonconference game between two Northeast 10 Conference programs on Wednesday, September 17.
AIC is now 1-4 on the season.
The Penmen struck first in the first quarter, as Minke van de Poll hit the net at 9:05 in an otherwise relatively evenly-played period; Southern New Hampshire only held a 3-2 shot advantage.
The second quarter was much more in favor of the home team in terms of possession, with a shots-on-goal edge of 10 to one. However,
Frederique den Hartog stood tall, fighting off all of the chances. Meanwhile, AIC made its one chance count, as
Anella Rossi gained entry into the circle on the left side and fired a shot that
Milagros Zanatelli tipped in at 8:03 for her second of the season, tying the game 1-1.
Out of the halftime break, AIC took control of the game, holding the Penmen to just one shot in the third while firing four attempts. That momentum carried into the fourth quarter, and Rossi was the center of it again, driving in from the left side and wiring a shot in for her second of the year at the 3:30 mark.
AIC had the lead, and Southern New Hampshire made a desperation play, pulling its goalkeeper for an extra field player. The risk paid off as the Penmen drew a corner and van de Poll scored the tying goal with just 13 seconds remaining in regulation.
Zoe Demers then won it in overtime for the hosts with a breakaway tally at 1:13 for the 3-2 final.
den Hartog made 13 saves in the setback; her 12.4 saves per game average ranks second in the NE10.Â
