Softball swept at SNHU

HOOKSETT, New Hampshire - The American International College softball team fell 14-0 and 8-2 to Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 Conference play on Friday, April 18.

AIC is now 9-17 overall and 4-10 in the NE10.

Destiny McGrath worked a one-out walk in the first inning, but ultimately she was the only Yellow Jacket to reach safely in the game as Amelia Freitas threw a no-hitter, backed up by a five-run second and nine-run third for the 14-0 final.

In game two, Nevaeh Trejo singled to right for AIC's first hit of the day, and Julia Krijgsman also worked a walk, but the Yellow Jackets stranded the duo. Both teams left a runner on base in the second as well, with Morgan Bemont singling to center for AIC, and Gabrielle Lambert was able to leave a pair of Penmen on the bags in the third and fourth, ending the latter inning by inducing a popout to herself with second and third.

In the fifth, the Penmen finally broke through, with a walk and three singles to plate the game's first run.

AIC responded in the top of the sixth. Trejo was hit by a pitch, and two batters later Sammy Sanchez singled to center. Bemont then doubled into the right field corner, scoring Trejo. Sanchez then took advantage of a wild pitch, scampering home to put AIC in the lead.

Unfortunately for the Yellow Jackets, the Penmen rallied with two outs in the bottom half, with six straight hits coupled with a pair of errors to score seven runs and take an 8-2 lead, which ultimately was the final score.

Deirdre Curley made her pitching debut at the NCAA level, appearing in both games; she went 2.0 innings total and allowed three hits and struck out one.

AIC will look to rebound as the Yellow Jackets close out the weekend on Saturday, April 19 at Saint Anselm College for a pair of NE10 games.
