Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Men's Volleyball battles hard in three-match weekend

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The effort level was there, but the results did not go the way the American International College men's volleyball team had hoped in three matches across two days with Daemen University, Roberts Wesleyan University, and D'Youville University as AIC lost 17-25, 21-25, 21-25 to the Wildcats, 22-25, 19-25, 20-25 to the Redhawks, and 20-25, 25-20, 14-25, 34-36 to the Saints on March 7-8.

AIC's record stands at 2-14 overall and 0-3 in the East Coast Conference, with only the contest against Roberts Wesleyan counting towards AIC's ECC mark.

The Yellow Jackets played better in each set as they battled a strong Daemen team; the Wildcats won the first set fairly decisively, but in each subsequent set their attack percentage dropped while AIC's rose, with the Yellow Jackets committing fewer attack errors in each set as the match progressed. Nevertheless, the Wildcats were able to win thanks to a diverse array of offensive playmaking.

Against the Redhawks, the first set was a close fight, with AIC rallying late and scoring three in a row to draw within a 23-21 margin and force a timeout, but the visiting squad held on to take the set. From there, Roberts Wesleyan limited its mistakes and hit well, which along with strong blocking allowed the guests to earn the 3-0 win.

AIC stumbled in the first set against D'Youville, hitting negative, but bounced back strongly by swinging .417 in the second to take its first set of the weekend. The Saints answered with an impressive third, swinging .529 to take a 2-1 lead, and pushed AIC to the brink in the fourth. The Yellow Jackets rallied, staving off several match points, and both teams pushed to the limit and beyond before finally the Saints were able to finish it on the set's 70th point, winning 36-34 to take the match.

Willie Lopez Morales led AIC on the weekend with 31 kills, while Hector Garcia Quiros notched 24 and Emil Zhmaidziak collected 21, including a 13-3-21 line to hit .476 in the battle with D'Youville. Aidan Miller dished out 78 assists, while Fabian Lugo completed 23 digs and Lopez Morales stopped 21.

The team returns to action on Tuesday, March 18 at Regis College. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m.
