WORCESTER, Massachusetts - The American International College men's soccer team will head into the final regular season game in control of its own destiny for the postseason after a 2-0 Northeast 10 Conference win at Assumption University on Saturday, November 1.
AIC is now 3-8-4 with a 2-5-1 NE10 record.
The first half was relatively even, and went by scoreless thanks in part to four saves by Javier Solá Martínez.
The Yellow Jackets broke the deadlock early in the second half.
Simba Pelletier broke into the box on the right side and danced free of two defenders before crossing to
Pietro Botasso, who headed home his team-leading fifth of the season at the 47:36 mark.
Now in the lead, AIC had to face increased pressure from the Greyhounds, but the team was able to shrug it off and extend the lead to 2-0.
Max Lernell fired a ball through the left side of the box onto Botasso, who had cut past the defense, and he took the pass at the goal line and fired it back to the penalty kick spot, where
Raphael Rothschedl was there to blast in his second of the season at 73:17.
The Greyhounds continued to press and fired shot after shot, but Solá Martínez came up with every save, piling up 11 total stops for his fourth clean sheet of the season.
AIC has one remaining game, on Wednesday, November 5 at 7:00 p.m. against Saint Michael's College at Ronald J. Abdow Field. An AIC win clinches a berth in the Northeast 10 Championship Tournament, while a draw along with a Saint Anselm College loss or draw at Franklin Pierce University also ensures a playoff berth; finally, if AIC loses, the Yellow Jackets still make the postseason if the Hawks lose or draw and Pace University ties or loses at Adelphi University.Â
