Men's Soccer blanks Pace on Senior Day

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - On a day when the team honored its seniors, the American International College men's soccer team made sure they went home winners, downing Pace University 1-0 in Northeast 10 Conference play on Saturday, October 25.

AIC is now 2-7-4 overall with a 1-5-1 NE10 mark, good for four points.

Both teams put two shots on target in the first half; Pace's best chance came when Nikita Dushkevich snuck behind the defense in the 31st minute, but was denied by AIC's Javier Solá Martínez, and two minutes later a pair of chances by Guilherme Afonso and Leonard Riby-Williams were turned back by Khais Milligan at the other end.

In the second half, AIC nearly broke through on a Simba Pelletier breakaway. The senior was able to get past Milligan, but his shot clanked off the post, and Milligan then denied Henrique Peleja point-blank on the rebound in the 71st minute.

The rebound of that save went over the net, giving AIC a corner kick, and the Yellow Jackets turned their frustrations around on that corner, as Peleja's left-side cross was headed home into the right corner of the net by Pietro Botasso for his fourth of the season at 70:49.

From there, the Yellow Jackets had to hold off a strong Setters push. Dushkevic nearly equalized on a stretch play in the 82nd minute, but was turned aside by Solá Martínez, and AIC hung on for the win. The senior goalkeeper ultimately made three total saves in the game as AIC outshot Pace 6-3.

The Yellow Jackets break from NE10 action for a tilt with Mercy University on Wednesday, October 29 at 7:00 p.m.
