SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - Several program records fell as the American International College women's rugby team won 140-0 over the University of New Haven in National Intercollegiate Rugby Association Division II action on Saturday, October 18.
AIC is now 4-1 overall and 3-0 in NIRA Division II.
AIC scored on the opening kickoff, as the Chargers mishandled the ball and
Naomi Dodd ran onto it and broke for a try just 20 seconds into the contest.
Kiyanah Edwards notched two tries, and
Mahina Hafoka added another as AIC led 28-0 just 10 minutes in with four conversions by
Luna Bussing.
Bussing then scored her first try, and the Yellow Jackets kept control over the next half hour with Dodd,
Haley Thompson, Edwards,
Shiela Sarmiento, Dodd again, two more by Edwards, and
Morgan Schechter scoring, the last on the final play of the half. Bussing made six more conversions, giving AIC an 85-0 lead at the break.
Mariah Cuarenta struck just 25 seconds into the second half as AIC's reserves made their way onto the field and scoresheet; second half tries also came from
Angel Davis, Bussing, Hafoka,
Makaleta Bloomfield,
Talimaia Fuala'au, Schechter,
Brooklyn Duke, and the last by
SaTya Miller. Bussing converted five of those tries successfully, and the final whistle sounded after she knocked home the kick on Miller's score for the 140-0 result.
AIC set program single-game records for total points scored, points in a shutout win, and margin of victory, all 140, as well as tries with 22, and successful conversions with 15.Â
For Bussing, the 40 points she scored in the match were a career high.
AIC next sets its sights on claiming the top seed in the NIRA Division II Championship Tournament with a showdown against Bowdoin College, NIRA Division II's other undefeated program. Kickoff at Bowdoin is Friday, October 24 at 6:00 p.m.
