SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College field hockey team fell 3-1 to Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday, September 30 in Northeast 10 Conference action.
AIC is now 2-7 on the season with a 1-3 NE10 mark.
The Owls struck first in the first quarter as Isabella Folster jammed in the ball on the left side of the net at 10:48 after an initial look by Taylor Leckey was stopped.
The visitors then made it a 2-0 game in the second frame; Leckey fired a high chip into the net on a penalty corner after gathering a rebound that was initially ruled no goal but ultimately determined to be a legal play. That goal came at 9:35.
In the third, AIC cut the gap back to one on a penalty corner goal. After an inital
Fenna Voll chance was cut down by a strong defensive save,
Anella Rossi pulled the rebound out of a pile of players and sent it toward the net, where
Milagros Zanatelli spun past the goalkeeper and deposited her fourth of the year into the net at 5:21.
However, the Owls punched right back, as Lindsey Onofrio shot in what proved to be the game's final goal just two minutes later.
Frederique den Hartog stopped 16 shots in the setback, her sixth game of the year with 10 or more stops.Â
AIC will turn its attention to the defending NE10 Champions as Assumption University makes the trip west on I-90 to Springfield on Saturday, October 4 for a noon start.
