Field Hockey puts up strong fight in loss to No. 9 Saint Anselm

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College field hockey team battled hard but came up short, 4-2, against No. 9 Saint Anselm College in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup on Wednesday, October 23.

AIC falls to 6-8 overall and and 4-6 in the NE10 with the loss.

The Hawks and Yellow Jackets played a mostly-even first quarter, and although the shot attempts favored the visiting team, AIC had the best chance on a breakaway by Brooke Szafran that Sidney Falterer was able to save.

Saint Anselm upped the pressure in the second, and on a late penalty corner broke through as Meghan Carey scored on a cross pass from Maggie Burchill at 14:39.

In the third, the Hawks netted another late goal as Meghan Smith hit the net at 13:25.

Amanda Lewandowski made it 3-0 for Saint Anselm at 3:03 of the fourth, knocking back her own rebound after an initial Frederique den Hartog save, and Marissa Politano drove home a chance at 10:32 to put the score to 4-0.

AIC rallied late, and broke the shutout at 13:40 as on a corner, Szafran turned a shot in front that Justine Lalli redirected for her first collegiate goal.

Just over a minute later, AIC notched another, as Fenna Voll wound up a blast on another corner that Morgan Martellio ran onto and tipped for her second of the year at 14:47.

Overall, den Hartog made 11 saves; Jennie Fuller was also credited with a defensive save.

AIC will next face Pace University on Saturday, October 26 at noon on Ronald J. Abdow Field.
