Field Hockey stings Molloy for conference win

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College field hockey team scored an early second-half go-ahead goal and defended well to maintain a 2-1 victory over Molloy University in Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday, October 12.

AIC is now 6-5 overall and 4-3 in the NE10.

On a first-quarter penalty corner, Mia Wood's shot was tipped and bounced to Morgan Martellio, who had set herself up at the stroke dot. She fired to the right post, where Maddie Darling waited to tap home her team-best fourth of the season at 8:23.

Molloy converted a corner of its own early in the second; Gianna Mastrocco jammed a shot home at 3:45 of the frame to tie the game.

In the third, AIC regained the lead. Off of a restart, Martellio fired into the circle. Wood, standing just to the right of the stroke dot, tipped the pass and bounced it by the goalkeeper at 2:45 for her second of the season.

From there, the Yellow Jackets worked hard to defend. The Lions rarely found themselves in AIC's circle, as particularly strong defensive showings from Dominique Bassallo, Victoria Nelson, Jennie Fuller, and Brooke Szafran limited the Lions to a pair of shot attempts over the final half hour of play.

Frederique den Hartog earned the win in AIC's net, needing only to make a late save to seal the victory.

AIC heads to Adelphi University on Tuesday, October 15 for a 7:00 p.m. start.
