WORCESTER, Massachusetts - The American International College softball team fell 8-2 and 9-5 on Wednesday, April 5 at Assumption University in Northeast-10 Conference play.
AIC is now 4-22 overall and 1-5 in the NE10.
The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring in game one as Abigail Wells drew a leadoff walk in the game's first plate appearance and advanced two bases on a sacrifice bunt. Kodi Gora was able to drive her in with a sacrifice fly.
Assumption tied the game in the third, and then took a 2-1 lead in the fourth. In the fifth, AIC bounced back, as Brianna Harzula led off with a single and Leah Twyman walked. Harzula swiped third and Twyman took second. That proved crucial, as Wells hit a grounder to short that brought Harzula home.
However, in the bottom of the fifth, the Greyhounds responded with a pair of runs on four total hits in the inning. They then added four runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
In game two, the Greyhounds jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the second with a huge inning. Despite the deficit, AIC battled, closing the gap in the third and fourth. Samantha Sanchez opened the third with a single and was pinch-ran for by Lily Acampora. She came in when Kodi Gora socked a triple to right center. Gora then scored on a miscue at second base during Victoria Andrade's at-bat, and Andrade ultimately came around on another mistake at second base. Then in the fourth, Riley Sullivan led off with a gap-shot double. Walks by Sanchez and Alexis Jimenez loaded the bases, and Gora and Andrade each drove in a run.
Unfortunately, AIC could close no further; the Greyhounds scored once more in the sixth for the 9-5 win.
AIC hits the road for four games in New York over the weekend; the Yellow Jackets play at Pace University for two beginning Friday, April 7 at 2:30 p.m. and then visit Adelphi University for a pair beginning at noon the following day.
