SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - Graduate student Ethan Teixeira befuddled Assumption University for eight innings to win the first game of a doubleheader for the American International College baseball team, who ultimately split on the day.
AIC is now 19-20 on the season with a 10-8 NE10 mark.
The Yellow Jackets wasted no time in supporting their ace pitcher, as Kiernan Caffrey doubled to drive Josh Frometa home in the first inning.
In the second, AIC added to the lead; with Yeudy Ramirez on first and Tyler Ziemak at third, Ramirez saw an opportunity to swipe second, and the throw he drew went into center field, allowing Ziemak to come home. Ziemak then scored Frometa the following inning on a sacrifice fly. The scoring for the Yellow Jackets concluded in the seventh, as Brandon Gaul's base hit scored Frometa for a third time.
Meanwhile, although Assumption knocked a leadoff single off of him, the Greyhounds found no success against Teixeira. He only allowed one hit the rest of the way, at one point sitting down 12 straight opposing batters. All of his stuff was working, allowing him to fan nine batters across the eight shutout innings, and his strikeout on the corner that sat down Assumption's Jack Barry to end the seventh gave him 100 for his career.
The Greyhounds did pick up two in the ninth, but Anderson Cuello Batista struck out the final batter to end the game in AIC's favor, 4-2.
Assumption responded in game two, a seven-inning contest in which they scored in every frame to win 23-2.
The two teams are scheduled to conclude their series on Sunday, April 30 at noon and 3:00 p.m. at Richard F. Bedard Field; with rain in the forecast, it is possible for the games to be rescheduled, so check back on aicyellowjackets.com and on social media for updates.
