BROOKVILLE, New York - The American International College women's rugby team went 3-1 at Long Island University's Shark Attack 7s on Sunday, April 16, falling in the title game after sweeping pool play.
With the results, along with results from earlier in the season, AIC has qualified for the CRAA/USA Rugby Women's Premier College 7s Championship to be held in Houston, Texas on May 6-7.
AIC opened with a hard-fought 14-12 win over the host Sharks. It came down to kicking, as both teams scored two tries but AIC was able to convert both kicks as well, with Venise Sanft adding four points to tries by Jessica Berggren and Morgan Schechter.
The Yellow Jackets then took on the University of New Haven, and handled business to the tune of a 46-5 win. Six different players notched at least one try, with Gabrielle Miller and Talimaia Fuala'au each putting the ball down twice.
In the final pool play game, AIC battled Sacred Heart University, and AIC came out on top 28-12. Schechter landed two tries and Berggren had one, while Sanft scored a try and made three conversions to put AIC on top heading into the championship game.
The title game was a rematch with the Pioneers, and in the second go-around the Pioneers adjusted and won 24-0.
Despite the ending, AIC's cumulative results across the spring were enough to put the team into the CRAA/USA Rugby Women's Premier College 7s Championship. The tournament is the national championship of rugby 7s, pitting teams from both NIRA and the CRAA against one another to determine the top team in college rugby. Seedings, and thus the tournament schedule, are still to be determined based on results of remaining regular season play, but the tournament will be held at Aveva Stadium and Fields at the Houston Sports Park on May 6-7. Aveva Stadium is the home field of the Houston SaberCats of Major League Rugby. Additionally, matches will be streamed by The Rugby Network.
