HAMDEN, Connecticut - The American International College women's rugby team went 2-1 in three matches at the Quinnipiac 7s tournament on Sunday, April 23.
AIC opened with the University of New England, and it was a game that featured a torrential downpour. Yet AIC was in control the whole way, as Gabrielle Miller notched a hat trick and the Yellow Jackets posted a 24-10 win.
In the second game, AIC faced a potent Sacred Heart team and the Pioneers jumped on every opportunity, scoring four times in the first half and ultimately winning 40-0.
AIC's playoff game for the tournament was a rematch with the Nor'easters, and it was defense that won the day for the Yellow Jackets. The contest was 5-5 late in the first half and New England had a strong push that AIC held off just outside the try line, drawing a knock on just after the horn to end the half. The Nor'easters took a 12-5 lead, only for AIC to score immediately off of the opening kick, and then the Yellow Jackets took the lead with just over a minute to play in the contest. The Nor'easters made one last push, and a key try-line tackle was the difference between victory and defeat as AIC was able to hold on for the win.
AIC's final regular-season tournament will be at Bowdoin University on April 29.
