SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College baseball team hung a seven on the scoreboard in the first inning of a 9-5 win over the University of New Haven, ranked 16th in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll, on Tuesday, April 11.
AIC is now 11-16 on the year.
The Yellow Jackets wasted no time in scoring as Brendan Edvardsen and Ryan Lavelle both walked; Kiernan Caffrey singled to drive Edvardsen in. Two batters later, Jackson Haker walked to load the bags, and Richie Segura drew a free pass as well, pushing Lavelle home.
Cam Fitzgerald then landed the biggest blow of all, doubling to left and driving all three men home. Yeudy Ramirez was then hit by a pitch, and Chad Lavelle singled thereafter to plate Fitzgerald. Edvardsen came up to bat again, and though he grounded out to second, it brought Ramirez home for the seventh run of the frame.
New Haven did add a run in the second and the fourth to cut into the lead, but AIC took advantage of some miscues to put two more of its own on the board in the fifth. Segura walked to lead off, and Fitzgerald tried to sacrifice him over; the pitcher threw the ball wide of first base, allowing Segura to come in and Segura to take second. He promptly swiped third. Chad Lavelle was then hit by a pitch, and Edvardsen bounced back to the pitcher, who got the out at second at the expense of Fitzgerald scoring.
The Chargers attempted a comeback with a run in the seventh and two in the eighth, but Hayden Mutz ultimately shut them down, retiring the side in order in the ninth to close out the win.
AIC, which has won five straight, will play a four-game series at Saint Michael's College on April 15-16; first pitch for the Saturday pair is set for noon, while Sunday's duo is slated for an 11:00 AM start.
