Big 9th helps baseball split with Bentley

WALTHAM, Massachusetts – The American International College baseball team split with Bentley University in a Northeast-10 Conference battle on Friday, March 31, falling 10-2 in the opener but bouncing back to win 8-4 in the finale.

AIC is now 6-15 with a 1-5 NE10 mark.

The Yellow Jackets struck first in game one with a sacrifice fly from Kiernan Caffrey that scored Brendan Edvardsen, but the Falcons took control with two in the bottom half of the first and then added three in the third. They blew it open in the late stages, with another pair in the seventh and trio in the eighth; AIC scored one in the ninth on hits by Tyler Ziemak and Brandon Gaul followed by an error for the 10-2 final.

In game two, AIC took a 3-0 lead in the third with a big frame. Edvardsen started with a hit, and after Josh Frometa was hit by a pitch, Caffrey singled to load the bases. Jackson Haker's sac fly plated Edvardsen, and an Austin Bequeath walk re-loaded the bases for Yeudy Ramirez, who singled in the two lead runners.

Bentley posted one run in each of the next four frames, while AIC added one in the fourth thanks to a Ryan Lavelle bunt single that got him to third with an error and then passed ball before Edvardsen sacrificed him home. That pushed the game past the scheduled seven frames.

In the ninth, AIC struck the decisive blow. Edvardsen, Frometa, and Caffrey all had hits to load the bags and after a fielder's choice out at home, Ziemak was able to bring Frometa in. Bequeath and Ramirez both walked, which forced Caffrey home. Joseph Lynch then put it out of reach, singling to right to put Bequeath and Haker back home safely.

Hayden Mutz, who had come in for the seventh, pitched a relatively clean ninth to earn the win. Over his three total frames he allowed no runs on three hits, fanning four without a walk.

The two teams finish the four-game set with two more in Waltham on Sunday, April 2.
