WEST PALM BEACH, Florida - The American International College baseball team was swept by Palm Beach Atlantic University 16-3, 13-5, 13-8, and 11-10 to open the team's Florida trip on March 10-13.
AIC is now 4-4 on the year.
The opener was all Sailfish as they built a 6-0 lead through four. In the fifth, AIC struck for three as Brandon Gaul hit an RBI single and Michael Cruz followed with a two-run hit, but that was all AIC could muster as the Sailfish swam away with a win.
Down 2-0 early in the second game, AIC took its first lead of the series in the second with a big frame. Carlos Pena and Chad Lavelle both singled and then were sacrificed over; Pena came home on a wild pitch while Lavelle scored on a Richie Segura infield hit. Yeudy Ramirez kept the hit parade going, and then back-to-back walks by Cruz and Brendan Edvardsen forced Segura in. A Jackson Haker sacrifice made it four runs in the frame. The Sailfish bounced back, retaking the lead with a five-run fifth and never looked back from there to take game two.
In the third game, AIC took an early lead in a back-and-forth affair with two each in the second, third, and fourth frames; the latter two featured a two-run single by Ramirez and a two-run bomb by Haker, respectively. The Sailfish had an answer again, however, with back-to-back five-run frames to secure the win.
In game four, AIC found itself down 4-0 after one but rallied to tie the game in the third thanks to a combination of walks and defensive miscues and a singular hit - a two-run blast by Kiernan Caffrey. He followed the next inning with a two-run single to give AIC the lead, and AIC added four more down the stretch to go up 10-6. Sadly, it was not meant to be for the Yellow Jackets, as the Sailfish walked off with five in the ninth capped by a three-run home run to secure the PBA sweep.
AIC continues play in Florida against Caldwell on Tuesday, March 14.
