KUTZTOWN, Pennsylvania – The American International College wrestling team fell 39-0 to No. 6 University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown and 40-12 to Kutztown University in a tri-match on Saturday, January 7.
The Yellow Jackets faced fierce opposition in both matches; Pitt-Johnstown's roster featured seven nationally-ranked wrestlers, including No. 1 Jacob Ealy at 149. Tommy Nichols faced Ealy, and scored a takedown and nearfall in the second period of a 9-4 loss. Joel Morth also put up a good battle with No. 2 Nate Smith at 157, dropping a 6-3 decision despite scoring the bout's first takedown.
The matchup with Kutztown was no easier; the host Bears boasted nationally ranked wrestlers at 141 and 184, with Matt Weinberg as the region's top ranked competitor in the latter weight class. AIC collected a pair of wins against the Bears, as Nichols pinned Sean Smith at 3:57 and Joel Morth won against Bailey Gimbor at 157 after Gimbor had to withdraw due to injury.
AIC returns to action Saturday, January 14 at the Will Abele Tournament hosted by Ursinus College.
