ALBANY, New York – The American International College women's volleyball team closed out a perfect September by sweeping The College of Saint Rose 3-0 in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup on Friday, September 30.
AIC is now 14-1 overall with a 3-0 NE10 record.
The first set was all AIC as the Yellow Jackets hit .423 as a team. Tied 7-7 early on, Paola Soto Burgos drilled down a kill and followed with a pair of aces to start AIC on the way to the set victory. She landed three more before the set ended in AIC's favor, 25-16.
The Golden Knights did a better job of keeping the second set close, taking the lead in moments, but the Yellow Jackets countered with another big run, scoring six of eight points to turn a 16-15 deficit into a 21-18 lead. The hosts answered back, forcing the set beyond 25 points, but the Yellow Jackets evaded a set point and scored three straight to win 28-26, with Naomi Eckert Rivera acing a serve before Soto Burgos finished the set with a kill.
In the third, Dora Butkovic notched three aces and a kill as part of a six-point run to give AIC a 12-6 lead. It was never in doubt from there, as the Yellow Jackets pilled on a 7-2 run to get ahead 21-13 and ultimately take the set 25-21 and the match 3-0.
Mai-Lani Hernandez was an unstoppable weapon in the middle for the Yellow Jackets. She landed kills on nine of her 14 swings, with no errors, to hit .643 for the match. Soto Burgos swung .450 with 11 kills, and Andrea Serra Rosa led the way with 12 kills. Eckert Rivera recorded 41 assists and 12 digs, while Camille Diaz Marin notched 15 digs.
AIC will flip the calendar to October and face a familiar foe on Tuesday the 4th, as the University of New Haven comes to town for a rematch of the 2021 NE10 Championship Game at 7:00 p.m.
