SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts – The American International College women's volleyball team made quick work of Pace University, sweeping the Setters 3-0 in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup on Tuesday, September 20.
AIC improved to 12-1 on the year with the win, and now stands at 1-0 in the NE10.
The Yellow Jackets roared in the first set, hitting .444 and committing just a single attack error against 13 kills as they won 25-11. It was never in doubt, as AIC scored 10 of the first 13 points and shortly after went on a seven-point run punctuated by two Andrea Serra Rosa kills. Set point came from the front line, as Aleksandra Ivanovic and Lyanne Hernandez put up a block to end the first.
AIC again built a 10-3 lead in the second, but the Setters hung around, cutting the edge to 12-8 after Georgette Cosentino ace. However, the Yellow Jackets held the visiting squad at arm's length thereafter, and Serra Rosa finished set point to give AIC the 25-18 win and a 2-0 advantage.
Facing that 2-0 hole, the Setters kept within a 6-5 margin early in the third set, but could not get ahead. AIC ran a stretch of 10 out of 12 points that included six straight, with a block and a kill each by Kristina Peric and Mai-Lani Hernandez and two kills by Paola Soto Burgos during the run. The Yellow Jackets led 22-11 at that point, and shortly after put away the match, winning the third 25-12.
Serra Rosa was her usual dominant self, collecting eight kills and hitting .412. Soto Burgos led the match with 11 kills, while Peric had three kills, three blocks, and eight digs. Naomi Eckert Rivera handed out 29 assists, adding an ace, a kill, a dig, and a block.
The Yellow Jackets next host Adelphi University on Saturday, September 24 at 5:00 p.m. in the Butova Gym. Tickets are available now at www.aictix.com.
