FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida – The American International College women's volleyball team swept Shaw University and Slippery Rock University by 3-0 scores at the Shark Invitational hosted by Nova Southeastern University on Friday, September 2.
AIC now stands at 5-1 on the season.
In the first set, Shaw jumped to an early 7-3 lead thanks to a five-point run, but AIC evened the set up, and it was a back-and-forth battle to 11-10 Shaw when AIC heated up, scoring 15 of the next 20; the Bears did not put together two consecutive points for the remainder of the set, as the Yellow Jackets won 25-16.
The second set was much tighter, thanks in part to a six-point run for the Bears to put them ahead 14-11 before Amber Williams blocked an attack to turn the momentum. Shaw kept the lead, but AIC hung close, finally tying it up at 20-20 thanks to back-to-back Andrea Serra Rosa kills. The final point, giving AIC the set 25-22, was a Perla Rosa ace.
Now ahead 2-0, the Yellow Jackets finished the job in impressive fashion. AIC hit .667 as a team in the third, with 14 kills and no errors on 21 swings, taking the final set 25-7 to sweep Shaw.
Against Slippery Rock, AIC found a much tougher match. The first set bounced back and forth, with no team leading by more than three at any point. An Erica Selfridge kill for the Rock tied the set at 23 each, but the next serve went out of play, and a block by Williams and Serra Rosa sealed the set for the Yellow Jackets.
The second set was error-filled by both sides; at one point, six consecutive tallies came on errors. At the end, however, back-to-back Williams kills were followed by a pair of Paola Soto-Burgos strikes as AIC won 25-18 to take a 2-0 advantage.
The third was yet more of the same, bouncing back and forth, but AIC willed its way to a win, taking a lead on a Kristina Peric kill with the score even 12-12 and never relinquished the advantage. Ultimately, AIC won 25-22 to complete the sweep.
On the day, AIC's offense was led by Serra Rosa and Peric, each with 15 kills; Williams and Ivanovic had 14. Naomi Eckert Rivera scored 62 assists and 23 digs, both leading the team.
AIC faces host Nova Southeastern in the finale for the weekend on Saturday, September 3 at 1:00 p.m.
