RINDGE, New Hampshire - A third-quarter outburst led the American International College field hockey team to its first win of the season, a thrilling 4-3 overtime win at Franklin Pierce University on Wednesday, September 14.
AIC is now 1-2 on the season.
The Ravens controlled the first half, scoring once in each quarter, with the second goal coming on a penalty stroke.
However, AIC's offense came to life in the third frame. It started with Brooke Szafran cutting into the circle from the right side and centering the ball for Nicole Mercadante. Mercadante then found Na'Bree Wallace loose to the left of the goal for a shot back across to the right post for her first of the year at 5:58 of the frame.
A penalty corner less than four minutes later allowed AIC to even the score. Szafran's insert to Shannon Cormier at the top of the circle was sent into the net by the team's captain at 9:32 for her first goal of the season.
The Yellow Jackets then took their first lead of the season a mere 83 seconds further; this time, Cormier took a corner insert and crossed it to the left side of the circle for Camarin Cook, who powered home her first of the campaign at 10:55.
The Ravens were able to level the score in the fourth to force overtime; AIC nearly won it late in regulation on a series of corners as time ran out, but could not net the winning tally before the horn.
However, in overtime, Szafran made a strong run down the left sideline. She found Morgan Martellio on the goalkeeper's pads just to the right side of the cage with a pass, and though Addy Araneo stopped the initial bid, Martellio pushed the rebound home at 1:38 of the extra session to give the Yellow Jackets the victory.
Taylor Wildes picked up her first win of 2022 with seven saves; Grace Boisvert added a defensive save for the Yellow Jackets.
AIC next plays Division I Lindenwood at Saint Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill, New York at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 18.
