Lavelle's clutch hit lifts baseball over SCSU in extra innings

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - It took an extra inning but the American International College baseball team walked off against Southern Connecticut State University on Friday, April 29.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Owls struck in the first inning. After reaching on an error T. Zambino scored on a single down right field line off the bat of A. Eng.
  • AIC answered in its frame of the first. Senior Angel Mendez led things off with a single through the left side and advanced to second when junior Michael Cruz singled to first. Mendez was off with the pitch when sophomore Michael Nazzaro punched the ball to left and Mendez scored to tie the game.
  • As the game continued both pitchers settled in and controlled the game. The Owl's starter went six-innings while allowing seven hits and striking out seven.
  • He was outdone by senior Jay Chiappetta who went 8.2 innings and allowed two earned runs with eight strikeouts.
  • AIC took the 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth when senior Dalton Quinn went deep to right.
  • In the sixth, freshman Jackson Haker hit a lead-off triple and scored when Nazzaro singled through the left side.
  • The Owls flew back to tie the game at three in the top of the ninth before loading the bases in the tenth. Freshman Hayden Mutz was called in from the pin who no out and struck out a pair before a walk gave the Owls the lead.
  • With two outs and no one on in the 10th, Nazzaro singled to left. He went to third when freshman Kieran Caffrey singled through the right side. Quinn was hit by the pitch to load the bases. Junior Chad Lavelle dug in and sent a shot through the right side which allowed Nazzaro to score. Caffrey rounded third and headed home and beat the throw to secure the 5-4 win for the Yellow Jackets.
NEXT UP:
  • The Yellow Jackets return to action on Saturday, April 30 when they host games two and three of the series starting at noon.
  • Both games will be seven-inning games. In-between games the team will honor seven seniors who are playing their last series at Richard F. Bedard Field.
