Field hockey bounces back, takes down Bloomsburg

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College field hockey team needed a bounce-back win and earned it, taking down Bloomsburg University 2-1 in a nonconference matchup on Sunday, September 5.

Final Score: AIC 2, Bloomsburg 1
Records: AIC improves to 2-1, while Bloomsburg falls to 0-2
Location: Ronald J. Abdow Field, Springfield, Massachusetts

AIC:
Avery Sevigny: One goal
Shannon Cormier: One goal

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Yellow Jackets struck on the first chance of the game, as rookie forward Avery Sevigny strode into the Bloomsburg circle and wired a bid that hopped over the pad of Abby Shaffer at 2:49. The goal was her first of the season.
  • AIC doubled the lead on a penalty corner early in the second frame, as a pass back to the top left of the circle after two chances came to junior midfielder Shannon Cormier, and her shot sailed home at 1:05 of the period for her second of the year.
  • The Huskies nearly got one back midway through the periodon a corner, as a shot went in at 6:24, but the officials deemed the bid to have come from just outside of AIC's defensive circle and waved it off. That ultimately allowed the Yellow Jackets to take the halftime break ahead 2-0.
  • The third period belonged to junior goalkeeper Jessica Stone. She was brilliant all game, but made six of her 12 stops in the contest in the stretch following the intermission.
  • In the fourth, the Huskies pushed, and a penalty stroke goal with 29 seconds remaining ruined the shutout bid, but the Yellow Jackets ultimately hung on to win 2-1.

QUOTABLE:

  • "After yesterday's game, we were looking to come out here today, set the tone, and show what we are really made out of. We turned the page and were determined to play our game like we know we can. We pressured early and it paid off. There was a total team effort out there today for AIC field hockey," said Cormier.
  • Stone likewise made reference to the loss to Pace less than 24 hours prior, as well as a few players who were out of the lineup, noting "I am extremely proud of my team and how we handle obstacles. It was a tough game against a strong opponent, but as a whole, we pushed through mentally and physically. I can't wait to see how the team progresses. This is only the start."
  • Head Coach Rhonwen Peters was pleased with the overall picture. "We showed a tremendous amount of self-discipline today. We did a great job of generating offense early in the game and capitalizing on our scoring opportunities. We knew Bloomsburg was going to come out hot after halftime, so our main focus was to defend our circle and preserve our lead. I'm proud of our team for bouncing back and sticking to today's game plan," she said.
