HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The first half was a clinic of defense by both sides as neither team generated much offense; junior Trystin Burger put a chance on target in the 27th minute but Hanna Copley easily stopped it.
  • With just a minute to play in the frame, the Skyhawks fouled at midfield. AIC was awarded a free kick, and Newman stepped up to take it. Her bid from 52 yards out incredibly hit the crossbar and went down into the goal for her second of the year at 44:18.
  • AIC took the momentum from the late goal into the second half and struck quickly, as a great pass from rookie Gabby Williams allowed junior Caroline Porter to break in behind the defense and fire a shot into the left corner of the net at 1:40 of the half.
  • Newman was selected to take another free kick following a foul, this time from 32 yards out. The result was the same, as she tucked the ball into the right corner for her third of the year at 8:53.
  • From there, AIC focused on defending, and kept Stonehill at bay; Zippin faced three shots in the half and stopped them all for her fourth shutout of the season as the Yellow Jackets won 3-0.

THREE AND THREE:

  • Porter, Williams, and Newman are tied for the team lead in goals at three each.
  • Together, the trio have scored 20 of AIC's 36 points.
  • One of the three has scored each of AIC's last seven goals.

QUOTABLE:

  • "We really showed our true colors as a team today. We worked together throughout the whole game. I wouldn't give any individual all the credit for this game, everyone showed up today and gave it 100% to get this great win. It was an electric and positive environment to be around; you could feel the amazing energy from every single girl out there," Newman said of the contest.
  • "It was a big week with two conference wins. We feel good, we're playing strong, and I'm really proud of the whole team," Zippin said.

NEXT UP:

  • The Yellow Jackets will visit Adelphi University on Saturday, October 2 at 3:00 p.m.
