SYRACUSE, New York - The American International College men's soccer team made another statement and continued its season-opening unbeaten streak, winning 1-0 in overtime over No. 19 Le Moyne College in Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday, September 22.

Records: AIC improves to 5-0-1 overall and 2-0-0 in the NE10, while the Dolphins drop to 4-1-0 on the season and 1-1-0 in NE10 action
Location: Ted Grant Field, Syracuse, New York

KEY STATS:
No. 19 Le Moyne:
Josh Mahr: Loss (4-1-0), two saves in 96:28

AIC:
Niklas Stalzer: Game-winning goal
Lucas Morales-Fernandez: Win (5-0-1), shutout (2), four saves in 96:28

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • AIC started off with the first few chances, as graduate Samir Regragui fired the initial shot on goal of the game in the seventh minute.
  • Neither team was able to break through by the end of the first half, despite six bids by the Yellow Jackets and four by Le Moyne.
  • Both teams took attempts at the target early in the second frame, as freshman Mathis Pilon St. Louis and Brett Stern of Le Moyne exchanged shots 1:32 apart. That was essentially it for offense in the half, as the Dolphins put one more shot at freshman Lucas Morales-Fernandez in the 78th minute but neither team seriously threatened.
  • In the overtime, AIC finally broke through. A cross into the box from the left side by graduate student Josip Validzic came free off of a defender right at the top of the six to freshman Niklas Stalzer, who made no mistake in firing it home at 96:28 for his second of the year and the win.

PULLING RANK:

  • AIC earned its first regular-season win over a nationally-ranked team on the year.
  • The Yellow Jackets most recent win over ranked teams had both been postseason wins; in 2018, AIC stunned the then-No. 15 Dolphins in the NE10 Quarterfinal, 2-1, while in 2019, the Yellow Jackets took out No. 6 Adelphi University in the same round, 3-2 in double overtime.

QUOTABLE:

  • "We stuck to the game plan we discussed before and dominated the whole game. It was only a matter of time before we put one in," Stalzer said, adding "Happy to score the winner in overtime."
  • "Today was a brilliant team win. I am very pleased with the work rate and effort from the entire squad. These are important qualities we are focusing on that will continue to drive us forward," Head Coach Luke Perry said. He added "To come up against a top program like Le Moyne and play the way we did was fantastic. Tonight we will rest, but tomorrow we prepare for our next challenge on Saturday."

NEXT UP:

  • The Yellow Jackets play host to Bentley University on Saturday, September 25 at Ronald J. Abdow Field. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
