AIC:
Shannon Cormier: Penalty stroke goal
Nicole Mercadante: One goal
Na'Bree Wallace: One assist
Jessica Stone: Win (4-1), shutout (1), one save
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- AIC controlled play in the first frame, putting two shots on target, but Ally Saigh was able to stop them both.
- In the second, the Yellow Jackets finally broke through, drawing a penalty stroke that junior Shannon Cormier was able to fire home for her third of the season at 8:05.
- In the third, neither team managed much; junior Jessica Stone made the only save of the period late on a shot from the right side.
- The Yellow Jackets doubled their lead in the final stanza as sophomore Na'Bree Wallace fed a pass to the netmouth for junior Nicole Mercadante, who popped home her first of the year at 3:28.
- The defense protected the net from there, not conceding a shot attempt in the entire fourth quarter to hold the 2-0 win.
MOVING UP THE RANKS:
- Stone earned her 14th career win, taking over sole possession of second in program history in the category.
- The only keeper with more wins is Kim Steiner '12, who won 35 games from 2008-12 and led AIC to its only two NCAA Tournament appearances while earning multiple All-American selections.
- The shutout was the third of Stone's career; Steiner holds the program record for those with seven.
QUOTABLE:
- "The team started off a little slow, but we picked it up and started playing our game. We controlled the controllables and did not let Molloy get in our heads. We are looking forward to focus on our next game on Tuesday. I'm excited for the potential of this group for the season," Mercadante said of the effort in the victory.
- "The team played with a tremendous amount of heart today. We have started to find our groove and it showed. Molloy's goalkeeper played outstanding and really made us work for this win. But we worked as a unit and were able to capitalize on some quality scoring opportunities," Head Coach Rhonwen Peters said of the victory.
NEXT UP:
- AIC will host the 2021 iteration of the I-90 Showdown as No. 7 Assumption University visits for a 7:00 p.m. start on Tuesday, September 14.
