HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game 1:
- After both teams came up empty in the first, sophomore left fielder Michael Cruz singled and then swiped second and third. After senior catcher Ian O'Brien walked, his classmate, shortstop Angel Mendez, drilled a three-run shot to left to bring them all home and put the Yellow Jackets up 3-0.
- AIC doubled its lead in the third as graduate first baseman Matt Costanza and sophomore second baseman Chad Lavelle each singled before redshirt junior third baseman Dalton Quinn roped a double to left to drive both in. Quinn ultimately scored later in the frame on a sacrifice fly by Mendez, giving AIC a 6-0 edge.
- The hosts responded in the home half, as a walk, double, walk, and single plated a pair, but AIC immediately rebuilt its six-run edge in the top of the fourth as graduate right fielder Matt Krause doubled into the gap in left to lead off the inning. Levelle reached base to put runners on the corners, and Quinn stroked a double down the left-field line to give AIC an 8-2 advantage.
- O'Brien led off the fifth with a single and took second on a wild pitch; he was moved to third on a subsequent groundout and sacrificed home by Krause to make the score 9-2.
- The Golden Knights loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth with one out thanks to an infield single and two walks, but could only push one run across.
- Costanza and Levelle each hit infield singles to start the sixth and then swiped the next bag, allowing Quinn to sacrifice Costanza in, making the score 10-3, which ended up being the final.
Game 2:
- The Golden Knights got the jump on AIC in the nightcap, as a leadoff single, stolen base, wild pitch, and double accounted for the game's first run in the bottom of the first.
- AIC tied it one batter into the second in unusual fashion as Quinn reached second on a bunt that was thrown away by the pitcher, advanced to third on a pickoff that was also thrown away, and then scampered home on a wild pitch. Senior catcher Anthony Clark then walked, as did Cruz, and Mendez drove Clark in with a single to give AIC a 2-1 lead.
- The home team erupted for six in the bottom of the second, with back-to-back doubles starting the frame as part of a six-hit inning for Saint Rose.
- AIC clawed a run back in the third as sophomore Kyle Leifert hit a one-out double down the left field line and took third on a wild pitch before scoring on a groundout.
- Saint Rose's Francisco Infante struck a solo shot to left in the fourth to add to his team's lead, and in the fifth a single, double, error, and single put two more Golden Knights onto home plate.
- AIC looked to get on the comeback trail in the eighth, and loaded the bases with a Quinn double, Clark walk, and Cruz single. Mendez followed that with a double down the left field line, plating the trio and cutting the lead to 10-6, but AIC could get no closer; the Golden Knights added one more in the ninth for the 11-6 win and series split.
ANGEL'S IN THE OUTFIELD:
- On the day, Mendez drove in eight runs and posted a .500 batting average.
- He nearly doubled his season RBI total, having driven in 11 runs prior to the twinbill.
- The longball was his second home run of the season.
