New Haven pushes past women's lacrosse

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts The University of New Haven used a second-half run to defeat the American International College women's lacrosse team 16-6 in Northeast-10 Conference play on Wednesday, April 21.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • New Haven jumped out to an early 3-0 lead as Cypress Levitt scored 0:40 into the game and Marina Skelly struck twice in a 2:30 span shortly after. Kyra Sparks then hit the net at 7:03 to add to the edge.
  • AIC bounced right back, with senior Devin Coulter setting up junior Sam Giordano for a tally at 7:54 and graduate student Krista Iwanicki pulling AIC within two just 54 seconds later.
  • Both teams buckled down defensively, as the game went over 15 minutes between goals; Iwanicki broke the drought at 25:02, pulling AIC within one.
  • Mother Nature took over shortly after, as the teams paused for a 72-minute lightning delay.
  • Out of the stoppage, New Haven scored with 2:09 left in the half to go into the break up 5-3.
  • Annie Acquavita scored two of the first three goals of the second half as the Chargers built up an 8-3 lead less than two minutes into the second frame.
  • Iwanicki and Coulter each scored goals for AIC, with the latter's tally at 4:20 bringing the Yellow Jackets back within three.
  • New Haven took over from there, running up to a 14-5 lead and ultimately earning a 16-6 win despite another Coulter goal at 19:18.
