HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The first half was not without its chances, but it seemed as though the teams would end up scoreless until late in the half when Jordi Brinkman fired a brilliant deep pass to send Samir Regragui on a breakaway. The veteran midfielder did not miss, slotting his shot into the left side of the net at 37:43 for his fourth of the year.
  • New Haven responded quickly, countering and firing a ball into the box that Adam Lindstrom was able to deflect home at 40:04 to tie the game.
  • With time winding down, the Chargers drew a throw in at midfield, but Regragui won the ball as it was deflected to midfield. He flicked it forward for Frans Dao, and Dao was able to split the defense and strike for his third of the campaign at 44:45.
  • Regragui was not done hitting the net. Out of the halftime break, AIC drew a free kick, and Regragui's bid deflected off a New Haven defender just inside the box and fluttered inside the right post for his fifth of the season at 53:08.
  • The Chargers pushed hard, and cut the deficit to one at 62:27; after a shot hit the crossbar, Christian Lombardo popped the rebound home.
  • New Haven continued to press, but they could not break the AIC defense again, and when called upon, Lucas Morales-Fernandes made the necessary saves to help AIC win by a 3-2 count.

THE OTHER GUYS:

  • In the 3-6 matchup on AIC's side of the bracket, The College of Saint Rose advanced in double overtime, defeating Le Moyne 3-2.
  • Southern New Hampshire edged out Adelphi 1-0 in the 4-5 battle, while Franklin Pierce handled Southern Connecticut State 5-0.

QUOTABLE:

  • "It was a well-performed game today from the boys," Dao said. He noted that "We controlled the game well and New Haven didn't have a lot of chances. It was a game that we should have put away earlier, but overall, a good performance, and we move on to the semifinals."
  • Regragui commented "It was an enjoyable game, and in the first half I believe we played some of our best soccer. As we expected, there are no easy playoff games, but thankfully we got the win and can use that momentum for Wednesday."
