Late goal not enough as women's soccer falls to Franklin Pierce

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International women's soccer team dropped a Northeast-10 Conference game against Franklin Pierce University on Wednesday, October 20 by a score of 4-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Franklin Pierce got the scoring going in the 21st minute when Aino Martikainen took a free-kick from 45-yards out and buried it in the top left corner. Nine minutes later when Tess McKenzie stole a Yellow Jacket pass at the top of the box and went bottom right corner past a diving Tamra Zipping to make it 2-0.
  • The game settled down until the last eight minutes of play. Martikainen tallied her second goal of the night on a free-kick. This time from the left side about 25 yards out she went top left corner again to give the Ravens the 3-0 lead. The Ravens extended their lead four minutes later.
  • In the 89th minute, the Yellow Jackets freshman Gabby Williams corralled a pass and drove on the right side towards the goal line. She found classmate Sydney Mercier trailing towards the goal and Mercier finished and made it a 4-1 game.

  • The Yellow Jackets will celebrate senior day on Saturday, October 23 at 1 p.m. against the University of New Haven.
