Women's basketball comeback falls short against No. 10 Adelphi

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts The American International College women's basketball team fought hard down the stretch, but fell 70-58 to No. 10 Adelphi University on Wednesday, February 5.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Panthers won the opening tip but failed to convert on their first possession. On Adelphi's second trip down the court, redshirt-senior Leonie Edringer converted an and-one to give Adelphi a 3-0 lead.
  • Adelphi scored five more unanswered points before freshman Kayla Robinson knocked down a corner three to give the Yellow Jackets their first three points of the game.
  • The Panthers took control and ended the first quarter on a 17-4 run, up 25-7.
  • Senior Rashana Siders scored the first points of the second quarter with a layup off a steal from junior Nyrie Holliman.
  • The Panthers matched Siders layup to go back up 18, but Robinson knocked down a pair of jumpers to tighten the gap to 14.
  • AIC was able to get within 13 points, but Adelphi ended the first half up 41-20. Junior Destine Perry, Robinson and Siders combined for 14 points in the second quarter.
  • Junior Asia Turner converted a layup from Siders to begin the third quarter.
  • With 6:26 remaining in the quarter, freshman AJ Washington drove in for a layup to spark an 8-0 run, capped off by a pair of threes from Perry and Siders, leaving AIC down 44-35 to the Panthers. Turner extended the AIC run to 10 unanswered points after a layup with 4:22 to go in the third frame.
  • At the end of the third quarter, Adelphi led 53-40.
  • With 4:05 left to play in regulation, the Panthers drove in for a layup to go up 15, but Turner and Siders knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to tighten the gap to 11 points.
  • With under a minute to play, Robinson knocked down a jumper to get within nine points, their first-time down single-digits since the first quarter. That was the last bucket scored by the Yellow Jackets as they fell 70-58 to Adelphi.
