HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • An evenly-played first period saw the visitors score first as the Chargers drew a penalty stroke from a penalty corner and Riley Bialko scored at 13:45 to put her side up 1-0.
  • The Yellow Jackets quickly responded; they moved into the attacking circle and a cross pass by sophomore Lily Watson was redirected in by Wynona Shaw at 14:32 to tie the contest 1-1.
  • In the second, New Haven had two brilliant chances rejected by defenders; on a corner, senior Chelsea Davis turned aside a bid by Nina Bazan to keep the game tied, and then a lifted shot by Amy Baldwin was swatted out of the air along the goal line by senior Jenny Holmquist with 1:44 left in the period.
  • New Haven drew another penalty stroke early in the fourth quarter and converted again; Julia Battino struck her shot low right at 48:06, and that goal proved decisive in the 2-1 Chargers win.
NO ONE PUTS BABY IN A CORNER:
  • It was hardly for lack of chances that the Yellow Jackets came up short; AIC outdrew New Haven 7-3 on penalty corners, including a 6-0 edge in the second half.
  • AIC has drawn more corners than it has conceded in all but one game this season; Slippery Rock had a 10-corner advantage over the Yellow Jackets on September 7.
SAVING GRACES:
  • The Yellow Jackets two defensive saves in the contest gives the team a national-high seven on the campaign; the team led the country in 2017 with 18 defensive saves and again in 2018 with 16.
  • Davis's goal-line stop extends her NCAA Division II record to 33 career defensive saves; no other player in the Division's history has made 30.
  • For sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Stone, her six stops on the day vault her into eighth in program history with 192 stops; she is just five back of Ainslee Penfield '16, who made 197 in her career, and eight away from becoming the seventh goalkeeper in program history to make 200 career saves.
NEXT UP:
  • The Yellow Jackets visit Pace University for a NE10 tilt on Tuesday, September 24 at 4 p.m.
