HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The first set was knotted at 16 when the Yellow Jackets took a two-point lead on a kill and a block by freshman middle blocker Mai-Lani Hernandez and forced a Stonehill timeout. Out of the huddle, the Skyhawks went on a 5-1 run that made head coach Matthew Cribbin call a timeout. After the Yellow Jackets discussed the game plan, they went on a 5-1 run that included kills by graduate student outside hitter Sarah Lowery and redshirt-sophomore Andrea Serra, who was named NE10 Player of the Year on Tuesday. With set point, Serra timed her jump perfectly with the set from freshman setter Naomi Eckert as she sent a no-doubter to the floor. AIC took the opening set 25-23.
  • AIC kept rolling in the second set as they jumped out to the 4-0 lead and the Skyhawks took some time to talk things over. Leading 7-6, the Yellow Jackets showed how dominant they can be when firing on all cylinders. After a Stonehill error, senior outside hitter Jana Potic aced the serve. AIC then forced three straight Skyhawk errors before Potic aced another serve. Serra recorded another kill before the Skyhawks scored a point. That point did not faze the Yellow Jackets as Lowery and Potic sent thunderous kills to the line as Stonehill called their final timeout of the set. Stonehill tried to make a late push but a setting error by the Skyhawks gave AIC the set 25-14.
  • The Skyhawks, the eighth-ranked team in the region, knew they had to win if they wanted to have a solid chance for the NCAA Tournament, and jumped out to a 5-2 lead as Cribbin called a timeout to refocus his players. The Skyhawks extended their lead to six, 14-8, when Cribbin called his final timeout of the set. After refocusing yet again, the Yellow Jackets stung the Skyhawks for five straight points to make it a one-point game as Stonehill tried to stop the rally with a timeout. Trailing 24-17, the Yellow Jackets made a late push that started with kills by Serra and Potic. Potic and redshirt-sophomore middle blocker Claudia Gonzalez invited the Skyhawks to the block party and the Skyhawks decided to talk about the situation in a timeout. The late rally was a little too late as the Skyhawks took the set 25-21.
  • Despite dropping the third set, the Yellow Jackets were able to carry over their momentum. A pair of kills from Potic and another from Serra gave AIC the 3-0 lead. After a single point in favor of the Skyhawks, Serra led another rally with a kill followed by a pair of Stonehill errors and an ace from Serra. The Skyhawks used their first timeout of the set early as they knew they had to slow the red-hot Yellow Jackets down. The timeout was not very effective as AIC took the 11-2 lead before extending to 13-4 and forcing the last Stonehill timeout of the set. AIC led 19-9 when the Skyhawks tried to keep the match alive as they made it 19-12. Serra started to flip the tables as she recorded a kill and an ace while Lowery notched another powerful kill. AIC was two points away from taking the match then Lowery and Serra each sent a pass from Eckert that was not able to be handled by the Skyhawks to put them in the NE10 Championship Game for the second straight year.
