Men's soccer locks up postseason berth in draw at Saint Rose

ALBANY, New York The American International College men's soccer team drew The College of Saint Rose 1-1 on Saturday, November 2 to clinch a Northeast-10 Conference Championship Tournament berth for the second consecutive year.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Yellow Jackets struck first as graduate Adrian Romero crossed a ball in from the left side and his classmate Yanis Boucetta headed it into the cage at 29:47.
  • The hosts equalized just over seven minutes later, as a foul gave the Golden Knights a free kick and Hilmar Halldorsson deflected it into the goal at 36:57.
  • Offense was at a premium from there; rookie Frans Dao had the only shot on goal of the game after halftime, as the teams played scorelessly through the second period of play as well as both overtimes.
POSTSEASON BOUND:
  • The Yellow Jackets needed just one standings point to lock up a playoff to eliminate Southern Connecticut State from postseason contention; the Owls fell 4-0 at Southern New Hampshire, which also closed the door on their playoff hopes.
  • As of now, AIC is in eighth place in the NE10. The Yellow Jackets could potentially advance as high as sixth; they would need a win outright against the Ravens in their next game to have any hope of finishing further up the table.
  • Assuming AIC does win, the team would pass Saint Rose should the Golden Knights fall against Adelphi thanks to a tiebreaker, and would pass Bentley if the Falcons draw or lose at New Haven.

  • The Yellow Jackets host the Ravens on Wednesday, November 6 at 6 p.m.
