HOW IT HAPPENED:
- AIC trailed 9-7 in the first set when redshirt-sophomore outside hitter Andrea Serra started a Yellow Jacket run. The Yellow Jackets forced an attack error on the next play before Serra sent another pass from freshman setter Naomi Eckert to the floor. After a point for the Greyhounds, AIC used an Assumption attack error and a kill by graduate student outside hitter Sarah Lowery to force a timeout by the home team. The timeout seemed to work as AIC committed a service error, but senior outside hitter Jana Potic kept the momentum rolling as she started another Yellow Jacket run. The 5-0 run included a tandem block by redshirt-sophomore middle blocker Claudia Gonzalez and Lowery, a kill by Lowery, and back-to-back aces by sophomore Ada Guilera-Martinez. The Greyhounds stopped the bleeding for a point as they made it 19-12, but Lowery started another AIC 5-0 run. This run included a pair of Assumption errors, an ace by Potic, and a kill by Eckert. The Yellow Jackets took the set 25-13.
- In the second set, the Yellow Jackets led 6-5 when they started a 3-0 run, which included back-to-back aces by Potic, and forced an Assumption timeout. Out of the break, the Greyhounds brought it to within three, 13-10, when AIC put together a pair of points that forced the Greyhounds to use their second timeout of the set. AIC took advantage of the home timeout situation. Leading 17-14, the Greyhounds gave AIC a point on a bad serve which gave the Yellow Jackets the momentum. Potic kept the ball rolling with an ace which was followed by a thunderous kill by Gonzalez. Potic scored the next two tallies with another ace and a kill. The last point of the rally came off a ball-handling error by the team in blue. The Yellow Jackets took the second set 25-17.
- Leading 9-7 in the third, Gonzalez and Serra each recorded a kill and the Greyhounds' coach wanted to discuss the game plan with the team. That discussion did not stop the AIC energy as the Yellow Jackets took the next three points as well. Assumption tried to make a push as they trailed 16-9. They used a 5-0 run to make it a two point game before tying things up at 18. Knotted at 20, Serra used a pair of kills and forced the Greyhounds to talk things over. Out of the huddle, the Yellow Jackets kept feeding Serra as she recorded a kill on the next play before making an error on the following play. That did not stop the Yellow Jackets from feeding her again, as she gave the Yellow Jackets the 24-21 lead before junior outside hitter Andjela Bublic finished the match with a kill.
