Potic passes milestone in volleyball win over Adelphi

GARDEN CITY, New York - The American International College volleyball team opened a three-game road swing with a visit to Adelphi University on Saturday, September 29, posting a 3-1 win over the Panthers.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Right out of the gate, the Yellow Jackets swung their way to an early 6-1 lead that included junior outside hitter Jana Potic's 1,000th career kill. The Panthers clawed their way back and took a 13-11 lead, forcing an AIC timeout. Tied at 22, redshirt freshman middle blocker Claudia González had a kill before the Yellow Jackets forced two Panther errors to take the first set, 25-22.
  • AIC kept the momentum going as it jumped out to a 4-1 lead. After the Panthers took the 11-7 lead, AIC rallied the next nine points to take the 16-11 lead. Adelphi attempted to make a comeback, but the Yellow Jackets took the set, 25-18.
  • The Panthers started to rally in the third when the score was tied at five. They went on a 9-0 run to take a 14-5 lead, eventually taking the set, 25-13.
  • Tied at nine in the fourth set, the Yellow Jackets scored the next three points to force an Adelphi timeout. AIC continued to roll to an 18-11 lead as they ended up taking the set 25-17.

GAME NOTES:
  • Poticjumped into fifth place in program history in kills against Adelphi. She currently has 1,012 kills. She trails her teammate, senior Diva Riva-Reyes, who is in fourth place, by 99 kills.
  • With a kill in the third set against Holy Family on September 7, Rivas-Reyesbecame the fifth player in AIC program history with 1,000 career kills. She recently jumped into fourth place in program history with 1,111 kills. She currently trails Sarah Neaves, who has 1,148 career kills, by 37.
  • Rivas-Reyes is currently fourth place in program history in points with 1,177.5. She currently trails Neaves, who scored 1,317 points in her career at AIC. Tied with her isPotic, who has also has scored 1,177.5 points in her career so far.
