Softball falls to SCSU on rainy afternoon

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College softball team hosted one final game this season as rain drove the Owls of Southern Connecticut State to move locations. The unexpected home field advantage did not help the Yellow Jackets as they fell by a score of 12-4 on Friday, April 27.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Despite hosting the game, the Yellow Jackets were officially the visiting team. They used that to their advantage as senior shortstop Yami Lopez-Perez led things off with a double to right field. She then took advantage of two wild pitches on a wet day to make it a 1-0 game.
  • The Owls would answer in the bottom of the second to tie the game at one.
  • In the top of the third, Lopez-Perez led things off by walking of four straight pitches before taking second on a passed ball. Freshman left fielder Bonnie Kennedy followed up with a walk before a double steal put Yellow Jackets on the corner. Senior catcher Jamie Mainez then hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Lopez-Perez. Junior Kayla Riley then singled to left to score Kennedy followed by a double by junior Kaley Kempf that scored Riley.
  • SCSU then answered and took the lead in the bottom of the third. The Owls scored six runs on six hits and one AIC error to give them the 7-4 lead.
  • Southern Connecticut scored three runs on four hits in the fifth and ended the game in the sixth with two runs on four hits.
UP NEXT:
  • AIC will round out their season with a pair of games on Saturday, April 28 at Southern Connecticut. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
