HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Redshirt junior starting pitcher Nick Kennedy found his way out of trouble early - after the bases were loaded with no outs in the top of the first, he struck out the next three batters to keep the Golden Knights off the board.
  • Leading off for the Yellow Jackets in the bottom of the first, junior center fielder Josh Aviles singled to right field and then advanced to second base in the next at bat after a passed ball. A double from Costanza would score Aviles and put AIC on the board first. During the next at-bat, a sacrifice fly from sophomore right fielder Matt Krause drove in Costanza and gave the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 lead.
  • In the top of the third with runners on second and third, a passed ball allowed the Golden Knights to earn their first run of the game. Saint Rose would quickly tie things up in the third when Michael Shine hit a dribbler that forced Kennedy off the mound and beat the throw to first to allow another run to cross the plate. A sacrifice bunt from Kenny Fils-Aime would score the runner from third and give the Golden Knights the 3-2 advantage.
  • The Yellow Jackets would bounce right back in the bottom of the fourth when Krause singled up the middle. After two consecutive flyouts, freshman third baseman Will Johnson singled as Krause advanced to third. Freshman catcher Anthony Clark's RBI single to left field would score Krause and tie the contest up at three runs apiece.
  • AIC would reclaim the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Costanza's single scored junior shortstop Brendan Carter and gave the Yellow Jackets the 4-3 lead.
  • Redshirt senior pitcher Jason Coscio would come in for relief and throw three shutout innings to help AIC preserve a 4-3 win on Thursday.

BUZZWORTHY:
  • Costanza's three-hit performance marked the fourth time that the sophomore has recorded three hits in a game this season.
  • After only giving up two earned runs against Saint Rose, Kennedy has now only given up two earned runs or less in four of his seven appearances on the mound this season.
  • Krause is now riding a five-game hitting streak. In two of those games, he had multiple hits.
  • With its 16th win of the year, AIC has tied its win total from 2017; the Yellow Jackets have seven games remaining this regular season.

COACH'S CORNER:
  • "Every time he's taken the mound, he's thrown really well for us," said AIC baseball coach Nick Callini on Kennedy's performance. "There's no replacing a guy like that who's been a mainstay, who's been in high-pressure games, and this was an important game for us. We didn't make things easy for him early on, but to go out and have bases loaded in the first inning, and none of his own accord, then to go back and strike three guys out, that really set a nice positive tone for us."

NEXT UP:
  • AIC continues its homestand with a three-game series against Southern Connecticut State University.
  • The series will start with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 28, with the first game scheduled for 12 p.m. at Bedard Field. The series finale on Sunday, April 29 will start at 1 p.m.
  • Sunday's game also marks Senior Day for the Yellow Jackets.
