Women's basketball wins third straight

GARDEN CITY, New York - The American International College women's basketball team won its third straight game as they defeated Adelphi University 81-73 on Saturday, December 8.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Down 6-5 in the first quarter, the Yellow Jackets took a 10-6 lead thanks in part to a layup by senior guard Alyssa Guyon and a three by junior guard Rashana Siders. The Panthers outscored the Yellow Jackets 10-4 in the last four minutes of the quarter to take the 16-15 lead after 10 minutes.
  • The Yellow Jackets took their biggest lead of the first half in the second quarter when senior guard Dominque Boyd laid one in and gave AIC the 25-21 lead with 4:12 left in the quarter. Adelphi cut the AIC lead to two, and the Yellow Jackets had a 30-28 lead at the break.
  • The Panthers took their only lead of the third quarter at the 8:12 mark on a layup. AIC answered with a layup from senior forward Dana Watts 22 seconds later. From that point on, the Yellow Jackets grew their lead to as many as six points but ended the quarter with a five-point lead. 53-48.
  • On their first four possessions of the fourth quarter, the Yellow Jackets scored a total of nine points and took a 59-50 lead. The Yellow Jackets took a 13 point lead twice on their way to an 81-73 win.
BUZZWORTHY:
  • For the third straight game, Watts has led the Yellow Jackets in points and rebounds. She has been averaging 23.3 points and 12.3 rebounds.
  • The team's 81 points is its second highest score of the season. The team was just one point off its season high, 82, which came against The College of Saint Rose on November 17.
  • As a team, the Yellow Jackets made 10 three pointers, a season high.
  • For the first time this season Siders scored double-digits. Her 19 points against Adelphi is also a career high.
